Process plant heaters perform the function to heat and maintain the process fluids at the required temperatures for the manufacture of the product. Process boilers/ hot oil systems provide steam/ thermal energy that can be used at multiple units in the process plant. Electrical heating systems are also becoming popular due to higher thermal efficiencies, compared to fossil fuel-based heating systems. Process heating systems evolved over time and in recent years, a considerable number of technical developments have been made for energy efficiency improvements via combustion optimization and increased heat recovery methods. These technical developments help also with operational safety and reduction of pollutant emissions. Many existing process heating systems provide enormous energy saving

opportunities by simple changes in the combustion control and total system approach modifications.


In process plant pumping and heating systems, energy efficiency is an opportunity as energy recovery may not always be economically attractive and thus process plants are better off saving energy in the first place than attempting to recover it at a later stage.


Although fully optimizing any design will require some effort after installation, the prevalence and magnitude of the savings that are commonly found in revamp projects raise the larger question: How much greater would the savings be if pumps and heaters were selected and applied optimally during the design phase? Process duty conditions decisions made during the design phase have enormous implications on Energy costs throughout the operating life of the process plant. In this background the proposed workshop titled "Energy Efficient Engineering of Process Plant Pumping and Heating Systems" attempts to provide the much-needed clarity on the Process design aspects and Mechanical design aspects of Pumping and Heating Systems towards achieving the energy efficiency immediately after commissioning the

Process Plant.


Objectives

This workshop is designed to enable the practicing Engineers/ Managers/ Academic staff to enhance their knowledge and understanding of the factors that must be considered into the design of Energy Efficient Engineering of Process Plant Pumping and Heating Systems. The key objectives of the workshop are:


For Pumping System

• Understand the technical principles of fluid flow in pumping System

• Evaluate the pumping applications to choose the proper type of pump

• Adopt Systems approach that integrates process and equipment data together with pipe elements, drivers and control elements for an optimum pumping System design that yields the highest efficiency, reliability and maintainability

• Understand the impact of maintenance on pumping System efficiency


For Heating System

• Understand the technical principles of heat generation and heat transfer using heating System

• Evaluate the heating applications to choose the proper type of heating system

• Adopt Systems approach that integrates process and equipment data together with pipe elements, fuel burners and control elements for an optimum heating System design that yields the highest efficiency, reliability and maintainability

• Understand the impact of maintenance on heating System efficiency
